Travel by Air

Copenhagen airport is the largest airport in Denmark, but there are also two smaller airports in the area, Aarhus (Tirstrup) and Billund (see the map below).

Aarhus Airport (AAR)

  • Aarhus Airport (Tirstrup) is the closest airport to Ebeltoft (see the map below) and we recommend that if you will be flying to Denmark that you try to arrange your travel to this airport. It is a small airport and has arrivals from Copenhagen (at least 8 flights a day), London (Stansted), Oslo, Stockhom and Gothenburg.

The London flights are from Stansted and are operated by Ryanair. Flights have to be booked directly with Ryanair either online or by phone. The other flights into Aarhus Airport are operated by SAS and Cimber Sterling (from Copenhagen) and British Airways (others) and can be booked online or through a travel agent.

There are at least 8 flights a day (weekdays) between Copenhagen and Aarhus and the cost of a return ticket if booked in advance is ~500 DKK (€67). If you are booking your travel from your home with SAS or one of the Star Alliance airlines (Lufthansa, TAP, BMI, Austrian and many others) then the Copenhagen-Aarhus flight can be included in the ticket and is generally cheaper if booked this way. Flights between Copenhagen and Aarhus can also be booked with Cimber Sterling

  • From Aarhus Airport there is a direct bus to Ebeltoft which takes around 20 minutes. See the local travel page for details of the bus timetable.

  • Further information regarding Aarhus airport can be found at http://www.aar.dk which gives details (in English and Danish) of flights, the bus service and car rental.

Billund Airport (BLL)

  • Billund Airport is much larger than Aarhus Airport and has arrivals from Paris CDG, London LGW, Brussels, Amsterdam, Munich, Dublin, Copenhagen and many others. Ryanair fly into Billund airport from London Stanted, Barcelona, Dublin, Edinburgh, Milan and Pisa.
  • There is a direct bus from Billund Airport to the centre of Aarhus. For details please see the local travel page.

Copenhagen Airport (CPH)

Copenhagen Airport is the largest airport in Denmark, with hundreds of flights a day from around the world. Easyjet operate flights into Copenhagen from London (Stansted 3 flights a day and Gatwick 2 flights a day) and have announced a new route from Geneva (starting the 12th of December). To reach Ebeltoft from this airport you need to either take a connecting flight into Aarhus airport or take a train into Aarhus City Centre then a bus to Ebeltoft.

  • By air from Copenhagen to Aarhus: The flight takes only 20 minutes and if your flight into Copenhagen is with one of the Star Alliance airlines you can usually buy the connecting flight to Aarhus included in the ticket.
You will then need to take bus 212 to Ebeltoft (see the local travel page).

  • By train from Copenhagen to Aarhus: There is a direct train from the airport to the centre of Aarhus which takes about 3 hrs 30 mins and leaves every hour at 40 minutes past the hour. (There are other trains which require a change at Copenhagen main railway station). The price of a one way ticket is 325 DKK and to reserve a seat is 25 DKK (recommended for journeys during peak hours in the morning and evening). You will then need to take the bus from Aarhus to Ebeltoft. For more information see the train information on the local travel page.
