ISA meeting

Week 48, November 30, 1999.

Status of the ring: Last week, we finished the O3- run, and continued with O2- with success. When trying to run Ethanol, however, the ion source caused serious problems with the separator in the form of sparks, which caused problems in some of the power supplies, so we had to end the run Thursday. Friday, bakeout of the windows in corner 1 and 2 started, and the Mg-run for the laser cooling group started.

The EBIS: The optics have been simulated by . It seems, that a focusing electrode is connected to the wrong stage of the acceleration tube. This seems to explain the problems we have had with a very poorly focused beam. We will correct the problem externally, but this solution allows only low acceleration voltages. For a full energy test, the EBIS will have to be opened.

ELISA will be equipped with new 160 degree deflectors, since it has been discovered, that the narrow waist in the middle of the current hemispherical bends causes problems with beam density, resulting in a reduced lifetime for large currents. The new cylindrical bends will not have this effect, and will not influence beam size in the straights significantly.

Gratings for the SGM3 and UV1 will arrive soon. All three SGM3 gratings should be here before Christmas, and the UV1 gratings by the beginning of February. The company is even making a spare set for the SGM3, since the first ones they made are not quite ruled to specifications, but still usable.

The ANKA booster has now reached the design parameters. Yesterday, an accelerated and extracted beam of 8 mA was observed..

The new undulator chamber, which allows for a 3-4 mm smaller undulator gap, will be mounted in the shutdown period after the current ion run. A slightly lower stored current is expected, and as usual, the lifetime will initially be low.

The control system has been upgraded to a new version on all frontend computers. Some problems with the DAF loader have been solved. In addidtion a new state and alarm system is running in a test version on all control consoles. Ask or if you want to know more about it.
