ISA meeting

Week 13, March 24, 1998.

Status of the ring: During machine time yesterday, we concentrated on getting a higher current and trying to inject into ASTRID without sextupoles, in order to observe the threshold for the head-tail instability. This is important in connection with operating ASTRID with negative momentum compaction factor, which will be tested during the next electron run. In addition, it is relevant in relation to the ANKA booster project, in which ISA is involved. The results were only moderately successful, and will be repeated later. Concerning current, we were able to accelerate 165 mA, which is the highest yet for this run.

Beam during the Easter vacation: Several users want beam during Easter (April 9 to 13), and we will try to provide at least one injection every day except Sunday. If anyone wants to use the ring Sunday, please let us know.

The new DAF-loader will be ready soon, as we mentioned last week. It is going so well, that it will be installed for tests during the coming shutdown (weeks 17 and 18), but the old system will be restored for the coming ion run. There are still some parts missing for the electron cooler data-taking system (FA). Final installation is scheduled for week 29-31, in time for electron run 2/96.

The microtron is being prepared for a higher dutycycle. KI is making a cooling system for the klystron tank, and with that, we should be able to run the microtron at 25 Hz for the positron beamline.

The ondulator beamline will continue with the present experiment (DF, SL et al) until Monday next week. It will then be vented, and the reactor and refocusing mirror chambers will be installed. This will take at least one week.

The Onduline is now under vacuum, and the cabling is almost finished. The control system is ready for it. John West from Daresbury will visit the Onduline after Easter.

The equipment we are getting from RISØ was prepared for shipment last week by TK, LT and LV. It will arrive in mid April.

The SX-700 is doing well. Jens Onsgaard finished his successful run last week, and now Per Morgen is using the monochromator. On Friday PH and two visitors from Berlin take over for the remaining two weeks

The SCIENTA beamline is running, and the first results have been obtained. The run will continue for another two weeks, when Peter Balling will install his laser and use the beamline for the remainder of the electron run.

Newsletter 7 is now being printed. It is also available on the web. It is stored as pdf files, and may thus be viewed in almost the correct format by using ACROBAT reader 3.0. The Newsletter page may be reached via the ISA homepage: On the 'Meet ASTRID' page there is a link to the Newsletter. You may also use the following URL: http://www.dfi.aau.dk/isa/isanews.htm
