ISA meeting

Week 26, June 24, 1997.

Status of the ring: The Mg run is going well, and the experiments by the laser cooling group are successful. The group has as the first used the new control system to run the ring from the laser lab via the net.

The electron cavity has been reassembled and leak tested. There is a small leak in one of the end flanges. Changing the gasket does not help, and we believe it is due to bad copper plating, perhaps some small pores, which are visible at the position of the gasket. In any case, we have always had a leak there, and now at least it seems to be smaller than it was before, so we should be better off than in the previous run.

The EBIS source is finally enjoying some progress: Last Thursday, the alignment was finished, and we had a nice beam with an intensity better than what we have seen earlier. Now, some small mechanical problems have been solved, and testing will continue today.

The Miyake monochromator probably needs to be baked again. JvE reports a pressure of 4 times 10-9, which is about a factor of ten too high. The rest gas spectrum does not indicate a leak. On this occasion it should be opened to check the alignment.
