ISA meeting

Week 10, March 4, 1997.

Status of the ring: Last weeks operation has been very smooth with 150-180 mA accumulated and 150-170 mA accelerated with a lifetime around 10 hours.

Monday morning the ring was vented to a pressure of some mBar (maybe tens). It happened in the following way: A turbo pump on the microtron stopped Sunday night. Since it was mechanically blocked and not electronically, it did not close the valve to the beamline, and air was let into it. The safety system closed the valves nearby when the pressure increased, and only two meters of beamline was vented to atmospheric pressure. The disaster was then, that two valves towards the ring was opened Monday morning using the safety bypass without checking the pressure on both sides of the valves. Although the valve at the ring entrance closed, this is a slow valve and hence did not prevent the accident.

We will now change the safety system so that these valves can only be operated with the safety bypass when the last valve (VVS01) to the ring is closed. Furthermore we remind you, that use of the safety bypass should be made with extreme caution. If you are in doubt, or are not 100 % sure about what you are about to do, then ask.

We have today Tuesday finished the bake-out of one ring-half and the cavity, and will bake the other ring-half and the injection beamline until tomorrow. With some luck we have a stored beam late Wednesday.

Undulator beamline The Miyake monochromator performs as expected and is ready to be moved to the undulator beamline after a final test with synchrotron radiation of a few days. KI et al. will start installing the first part of the undulator beamline this week, and hope to have it pumped by middle of next week. The mirror chamber is expected to be ready by beginning of week 12. David Fields apparatus is expected to arrive here Monday 10-3.

Shelves have been installed in the room next to the control room. Please display recent re/pre-prints on the shelves together with other material of general interest. We will also put newsletters, annual reports etc. from other facilities there.

A budget for the new SGM has been requested. David Field, SVC and JvE will take action.

New accounts and numbers has been made by Ruth, in order to separate investments from running costs.
