Facility Description

  • 2 x Thermal ionisation MC-MS
  • MC-ICP-MS + laser ablation
  • Ultra low blank clean lab plus sample preparation + general chemistry labs

Facility Applications

Routine techniques that can be performed in Amsterdam:

TIMS

Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Th-U isotope systems.

MC-ICP-MS:

Hf-W, Sm-Nd, U-Pb isotope systems plus high precision Rb, Li, Se, Si, S and Fe isotope determinations.

Examples of current applications:

  1. high temperature processes in meteorites and magmatic systems.
  2. low temperature processes to study biologic isotope fractionation and the study of extreme and Archaean habitats.
  3. Provenance studies for forensic-ecology-archaeology-art history .

Additional Support infrastructure

  • XRF for major and trace element analyses of rocks.
  • Quadrupole Thermo X-Series II ICPMS for trace element analyses of mineral separates and rocks.
  • Electron microprobe to determine mineral major and minor element chemistry.
  • Low blank clean lab for sample preparation.
  • Sample crushing and mineral separation lab.
