ISA meeting

Week 51, Dec. 16, 1997.

Status of the ring: For the past two weeks, we have been running Carbon clusters (60 and 70) for JUA, PHv et al. The run was successful, and ended Monday morning.
Yesterday, we started an electron cooler run for LHA and his group, running C2- accelerated to about 5 MeV. We have a good beam, and the run is going well so far.

The ISA board meeting yesterday dealt mostly with ASTRID II, SPM reports. Early in the new year, research initiatives planned for 1998 will be discussed by the chairmen of the reasearch councils, and the application for ASTRID II should therefore be sent to the research councils and the ministry before then.

The SGM motors are both running now, and will be mounted, such that SVH can start testing the monochromator in January.

The new control system occasionally has problems with stability. TW points out, that the kernel is very stable, but for the time being client programs (operator console) may crash. The computer group is of course looking into these problems. The group would like to move everything to the new system, but a few applications are still missing. As things get ready, more and more of the ring control system will be taken over by the new software.

The undulator beamline is getting a laser alignment system, which LT presented at the meeting, and which was discussed in some detail. It will be ready for the next electron run, starting in February of 1998.

1998 budget: If you have knowledge of large investments or travel activity in 1998, please let SPM know.

This is the last meeting report in 1997, so we wish all of you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year !
