ISA meeting

Week 50, Dec. 9, 1997.

Ring Status: We are continuing for a second week with the negative ion of C-60 and everything is going well.
There was a slight water flow problem in the correction dipoles last week but it was quickly put right. Next week LHA will start a two-week run with no significant changes to be made to the ring.

Safety: During this last run , it has become apparent that the temporary LASER WARNING signs are not being respected. The hall is left open but please be aware that exposed laser beams are often present but always behind temporary barriers with notices posted. This also emphasizes the need to remove notices and barriers when no longer required. If you are in any doubt , please check in the control room first.

The microtron has some problems with RF stability. The problems are caused by the waveguide when running at high power. It may need to be cleaned. We switched from SF6 to dry air last week, and apparently this gives some problems. The matter is being investigated, and the machine should be back in its usual good shape in January.

Eurotrap: Connected with the Microtron and positron beamline, Helge Knudsen, Jon Merrison, David Field and Stuart Lunt visited the Universities of Mainz, Bielefeld and the GSI last week in connection with the Eurotrap programme. A 6T superconducting magnet and penning trap will be coming here next spring from Mainz with the intention of storing large numbers of positrons at 4K. Experiments involving extracted low-energy positrons are planned.

ELISA: Progress continues on ELISA - a new injector source which will be better matched to ELISA is under construction.
