ISA meeting

Week 46, Nov. 11, 1997.

Status of the ring: Ion Run 2/97 is now well under way. Last week, we ran negative ions (CO2 and Yb) for TA et al with success, although the use of the Potassium charge exchange cell was problematic. This week, LHA has taken over, and we are now running CO+.

The new separator beamline: The negative run last week has led to some wishes for the new injection beamline: It would be very nice to have an airlock for the charge exchange cell, such that it can be refilled without having to shut off the injection beamline. In addition, a deflector and a cup after the cell would make it much easier to find the often very low-current negative ion beams.

No ISA report last week: We had a short meeting without sufficient news for a report, so do not look for a report from week 45.

The vacuum in ELISA is now down to 10-8 torr, which is sufficient for a test run. So far, only the ion pumps have been baked. As soon as the injector is ready, this will be attempted, definitely before Christmas.

The ISA Users' Meeting and the meeting of the ISA Advisory Committee will take place on November 26th and 27th. The remaining posters for the visitor platform should be ready before then. The program is reproduced on the back of this report.

The EBIS is getting ready again. The vacuum looks good, and the electrostatic ion switch is mounted. We will first extract rest gas ions via the switch, and as soon as the injector is mounted, we will try injecting into and extracting beam from the EBIS.
